First Watch: Let’s Shed Some Light on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger!

Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger series is a live-action romance that follows two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love, quickly learning they are better together than apart, but their shared feelings make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Cloak and Dagger is the new series that centers around Tandy Bowen(Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson(Aubrey Joseph) who come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul.  Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life.  Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life-changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless.  But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid.  Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off.  But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.  Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is the next Marvel hopeful series, this one premiering on Disney’s Freeform, formerly ABC family, on June 7th, co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Studios.  It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe based on the Marvel duo Cloak and Dagger.

“We are thrilled to be able to explore another corner of the Marvel Universe with Cloak and Dagger,” said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb.  “We want to thank Tandy and Tyrone’s fans everywhere who have been waiting for this exciting news.”

In the Marvel Universe, Cloak and Dagger first appeared in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 (March 1982).  After a number of  Spider-Man guest appearances, they were given their own four-issue limited series which debuted in October 1983 and was a success, prompting Marvel Comics to launch an ongoing bi-monthly Cloak and Dagger series in 1985. Costumed supervillains rarely appeared in the series, which focused on Cloak and Dagger’s quest to end the drug trade completely, and frequently explored the issue of vigilantism.  The first season of today’s Cloak and Dagger will get 10 episodes and much like Runways, a recent Marvel Hulu success, it will focus on the relationship and bond these two young adults share as they face the streets together!

“We are incredibly excited to be underway on our first Marvel project with such a talented group of actors that really enhance the world that our ‘Cloak & Dagger’ live in,” said Karey Burke, executive vice president, Programming & Development at Freeform.

Executive producer and showrunner, Joe Pokaski said “It’s been important to us from day one ‘Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’ is about character and emotion above all.  We’re so excited to have assembled a murderers’ row of talented actors who can execute on that, and then some.”

It all sounds so promising and early reviews from insiders are saying that Disney has a winner aimed at a young adult audience, much like they did with Runaways!  In just a  few months, it’ll be time to see exactly what Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger have in store, as they premiere June 7th, 2018 on FreeForm!
