What You Should Know:
Kasius and Sinara survived the previous episode. Kasius killed his brother Faulnak. The team escaped and headed to the surface in a ship while May and Enoch were rescued from becoming Vrellnexian chow.
What You’ll Find Out:
(SPOILERS AHEAD!) Where: The ship Zephyr One, 2018. “Three more cities just went dark” exclaims Jemma Simmons. May, who is piloting the ship says “The Lighthouse is still 200 miles out.” A little girl, Robin, is holding a carved wooden bird asking where her mother is. “Polly didn’t make it” Jemma answers. May tells Robin to go downstairs. Robin replies It’s OK we survive the crash”. A gravity storm is headed for the Zephyr. Robin says “There’s something else I need…”
Cut to the elderly woman from the end of last week’s episode finishing the sentence “…to remember.” She rubs the wooden bird and tells May “I told you we’d survive the crash.” A bearded, husky man enters and says “The Seer’s life is like a deck of cards shuffled out of order.; she can’t separate past, present and future.” The man is Samuel Voss and is the one who saved May and Enoch from the gravity storm and the Vrellnexians and brought them to the wreckage of the Zephyr. Voss says he’s going back out to rescue May’s friends as May watches the trawler fly overhead through the ships window.
Coulson, Fitz, Jemma, Deke, and Quake, Destroyer of Worlds reunite with May. Deke and Voss know each other. Jemma tells Fitz, about the Zephyr, “Your design really stood the test of time.” He tells her “Technically, I’m the engineer, not the pilot.”
Kasius wants to know if anyone survived the stolen crashed trawler. He sends Sinara to bring back his property–Quake, Destroyer of Worlds while he deals with the human insurgents who aided in the escape. He wants retribution!
Mack, Yo-Yo and Flint are making their way to Level 3 to retrieve the S.H.I.E.L.D. tech Fitz stowed before he went into the cryo-pod. At the Zephyr, Coulson thinks the Seer is their connection between the two points in time but May explains those points are indistinguishable to Robin. Coulson tries to get more information from Robin. May tells him she asked Robin why the Agents were taken from the diner and Robin told her it was the last time they were all seen together. Robin says “Philip J Coulson…he can bring all the pieces together”. Coulson asks “Pieces of what?” to which Robin replies “This is the day it all ends.”
Mack, Yo-Yo and Flint have made it to Level 3. Back on the Zephyr, Fitz and Jemma find an “isochronus cyclotron with resonant super-conducting coils” (a large circular metallic thing that looks like a hatch). Stumped on what to do, they smooch instead.
Mack’s group prepares to take on the Vrellnexians who have broken out of Level 3 and are killing the Lighthouse residents. Coulson and May find a fragment of the monolith in Samuel Voss’s tool box which was supposedly left there by Deke’s father and was supposed to go to Deke one day. Jemma tries to remove Sky-Daisy’s inhibitor collar but is unable to. Mack, Yo-Yo and Flint navigate through dead bodies and are set upon by the Vrellnexians.
In the past, Robin keeps repeating “Flint. Flint.” When Robin tells everyone that Mack will help Flint, Yo-Yo, who has become disillusioned and stopped believing, snaps back “Mack is gone! And he’s never coming back!!”
Mack in the present, or rather, the future, plans to use gas to herd the Vrellnexians into one area. Once accomplished, Yo-Yo does her speed thing and sets devices on the Vrellnexians which kill them.
On the Zephyr, Enoch tries to explain to Coulson that Robin’s powerful gift cannot be forced. But Coulson doesn’t have the luxury of waiting. Old Robin hands Coulson a drawing of a ship with rocks hitting it. Flashback: Young Robin is drawing a ship with rocks hitting it. Apparently, according to Robin, they need a time machine. Fitz says that is impossible, time is fixed. On the Zephyr, Daisy tells Old Robin she promised her dad (whom we’ve never seen) that she would protect her. Robin repeats “Time is running out.”
Fitz and Simmons discover that the hatch thingy has a laser vibrometer that measures the resonant frequencies of the monolith shard and locks onto the frequencies in the monolith through space-time. Excited to share their discovery, Fitz goes to the door which has been locked from the outside. Passersby Coulson and May hear them but are confronted by Zephyr occupants.
Quake, Destroyer of Worlds, is having a talk with Voss who shows her a video of the last time anyone saw Daisy Johnson alive. Voss wonders if all the devastation and suffering could have been prevented…like, by rubbing out Quake (Destroyer of Worlds) now. Old Robin says “We’re too late to stop it” which cuts us back to her repeating the line in the past. Fitz is fed up with the young Seer’s predictions which include describing Jemma’s death. He angrily goes off on the machine he is building yelling “We can’t change time!” He continues “Robin couldn’t change it. Voss couldn’t change it. Even Daisy couldn’t change it” which sets off Robin’s prediction of…
…back in the future…Voss tries to stab Daisy. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents overpower their attackers so Voss decides on Plan B and stabs Old Robin instead. As everyone in the audience has likely figured out by now “Today” being “The End” refers to Robin’s death. In the past it’s revealed that May became Young Robin’s surrogate mom. Before she dies, Robin whispers to May how to get home. May then asks the others “Who’s Flint?”
Epilogue:
Finally, a masked figure enters another part of the Zephyr and removes the mask revealing Sinara. Kasius’s orders…”Show no mercy!”
What This Means For The Future:
Mack will somehow guide Fitz in using his powers so Coulson can get the team back home. Along the way there will be battles with the Kree and Kasius and Sinara will get their overdue comeupance.
Final Thought: Time travel is such a pain in the ass. So, when Enoch kidnapped the Agents they and Fitz were set on a parallel timeline. Theoretically then, when the Agents do get back and the catastrophe is averted the second timeline should be wiped out and things should pick up with everyone eating pie. Unless, somehow, the Agents return to the point where Quake is about to destroy the world. That would leave timeline 1 where they weren’t kidnapped and timeline 2 where they had their adventure in the future. Then again, we have Fitz’s mention of Voss in timeline 1 (2022) where Voss would not have been born yet and Fitz would have no knowledge of Voss from timeline 2. I hate temporal displacement stories! Now I have a headache. A poignant if rather predictable episode.
