Though principal filming of DC’s Shazam! has already wrapped, casting details are still leaking out about the film. Today it was announced that Djimon Hounsou was cast to play the Wizard in DC’s upcoming superhero offering.

Interestingly enough, Hounsou also essayed the role of Korath, a Kree mercenary, in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. In a fun twist, the character is also primed to appear in Marvel’s Captain Marvel, making it so that he not only has important roles in a Marvel and DC film at the same time, but also making it so that he’s tied to two properties connected to the Captain Marvel name. This isn’t Hounsou’s first time in a movie based upon a DC Comics property, though. He also played Papa Midnite in 2005’s Constantine.

Shazam! hits theatres on April 5, 2019.

In the comics, the Wizard has had three different incarnations in DC’s ever-shifting continuity – first as a wizard simply named Shazam (sometimes called Shazamo, because why not?) and later as a shepherd named Jebediah who eventually became the wizard known as Shazam. When continuity changed again in 2011, after the Flashpoint event, the Wizard changed again. The Shazam name was passed onto Billy Batson’s superheroic alter-ego (known as Captain Marvel until then), while the Wizard was renamed Mamaragan and given a new backstory in which he was from the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Kahndaq and was on a council of beings who controlled magic from the mythic fortress called the Rock of Eternity. Seeking a successor to his power, Mamaragan passes his power onto young Billy Batson. Hounsou’s incarnation of the Wizard is believed to be based upon this third version of the character.

Shazam! hits theaters April 5, 2019 and follows a 14-year-old (Angel Asher) who gains the power to turn into a grown-up superhero (Zachary Levi) by saying the magic word “Shazam!”

As always, we’ll be watching!
