Review
Justice League Unlimited #8, written by Mark Waid, illustrated by Dan Mora, colored by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettered by Ariana Maher, is the explosive and potentially world-shattering conclusion to the “We Are Yesterday” crossover with Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. While this issue concludes the crossover, last week’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest started a new, unrelated arc. However, the timing of the latest arc gave this issue’s climax room to breathe and feel completely earned. Justice League Unlimited #8 is epic in every sense: from the writing, art, colors, and lettering. This creative team has carefully put together what started as a fun crossover but ends as one of the best issues from DC this year.
The issue follows various displaced versions of our favorite heroes taking on Gorilla Grodd, now dubbed Gorilla God, thanks to the villain harnessing Omega energy after the events of 2024’s DC All In Special. Readers are in for a special treat because this crossover and issue specifically gives Dan Mora free rein to deliver some of his best work yet and his own takes on fan favorite characters like Batman of the Future, Terry McGinnis, and one-handed Aquaman. On top of some of the best superhero action in recent years, Mora takes the opportunity to demonstrate his horror chops with some excellent body horror. Tamra Bonvillain’s colors are vibrant and brilliant as ever, bringing Mora’s art to a new level. The Omega energy throughout the issue is done in a way that makes the second half of the issue feel otherworldly. The assault on Grodd is well plotted and executed, that somehow gains momentum while still making time for the b-plot centering around Air Wave, which adds a sense of urgency and raw emotion to the mix.
Final Thoughts
The conclusion of this issue leaves some interesting implications and sets up for something massive. Avoiding too many spoilers, the displaced heroes are in one place, and the uncontained Omega energy might just change the DC Universe as we know it. If this creative team has anything to do with what comes next, readers are in for greatness.
