Review
Sai’s quest for Galackto’s elusive seventh stone continues throughout the multiverse. As she travels to desolate worlds watched by silver surfers and even a school for the magically gifted, questions of just what Sai is looking for out of this quest begin to come to light.
Usually with books made in this round robin style it can be difficult for the team assembled to stick to the same narrative structure throughout the book’s entirety. However, two issues in and Dimensional Rivals has yet to encounter such a problem. Each style meshes well with the others, creating a veritable feast for the eyes. Whether it be Peach’s signature calligraphic pencils and soft colors, Esad Ribic’s striking and powerful painterly layouts with heavy colors, or Natcha Busto’s more cartoonish style that is reminiscent of Gurhiru with their rounded character designs and bright colors. Thanks to Peach’s strong narrative direction, all three of these styles remain on track.
As far as the writing goes the book is a bit light, with Bustos’ segment in the final third carrying a bulk of Sai’s further development. A spiritual battle with Loki makes Sai start to question just why she took on this quest in the first place. Is this another way for her to gain power? Or is her cause much deeper? We aren’t given the answers here, but the cliffhanger at the end of the issue signifies that there is still very much to explore around our main character.
Final Thoughts
While light on story development, Dimensional Rivals remains a fun time both narratively and visually with strong direction and a very strong lead.
