Hot on the heels of March’s breakout DC: Next Level launches, including Batwoman by Greg Rucka and DaNi, Deathstroke: The Terminator by Tony Fleecs and Carmine di Giandomenico, and Lobo by Skottie Young and Jorge Corona, DC is turning up the heat this month with two bold new comic book series that push magic, mystery, and raw power into uncharted territory.

This week, The Fury of Firestorm by Jeff Lemire and Rafael De Latorre continues to expand DC’s Next Level initiative, spotlighting bold, creator-forward comics that put fan-favorite characters into the hands of some of the industry’s most exciting talent.
Lorraine has tracked down Dr. Martin Stein, but what she learns in the process could mean the end of Firestorm and Ronnie Raymond!
Review
Fury Of Firestorm #4 continues to tell the story of how Professor Stein not only manipulated and groomed Ronnie Raymond for Project Firestorm, but also reveals more about Lorraine was turned in to Firehawk as another way of controlling Ronnie. Through flashbacks, Lorraine comes to the realization that when she was in a relationship with Ronnie that she thought theybwere meant for each other, not made for each other.
Lemire not only drives this point home through the writing, but De Latorre and Maiolo also depict this through the art and colorwork as well. Readers are also given more insight into The Superman Project, the government’s attempt to create superhumans that they can control. Hopefully, this series will lay the groundwork or be used in the upcoming Doom Patrol Next Level, or a possible Metal Men one as Niles Caulder and Will Magnus are specifically mentioned by Stein.
Lorraine’s reactions and feelings toward Stein feel organic and builds the tension between the two. The issue, while serious in nature is not without it’s humorous beats such as the cliffhanger and the way Lorraine and Stein must make the journey from Upstate NY to Pittsburgh with the only means of salvation for Ronnie, and the rest of the world.
With the story and series approaching its finale, it will be interesting to see where this leaves not only Ronnie, Lorraine, Stein, Firestorm, but the DCU at large.
