Review
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #53, written by Mark Waid, penciled by Adrián Gutiérrez, inked by Vicente Cifuentes, colored by Luis Guerrero, and lettered by Steve Wands, continues to prove why World’s Finest remains one of DC’s most consistently entertaining books on shelves. Waid fully leans into a sword-and-sorcery adventure, leaving room for the artists to shine. A major strength of this arc, and of the series for that matter, has been Waid’s willingness to let the artwork do the storytelling whenever possible. Robin takes center stage and really grounds this issue. Waid’s use of the character in this series and arc is always a standout and a welcome addition. He represents the best of Batman and Superman, and while this issue has no shortage of the World’s Finest, Robin is the heart of it all.
Adrián Gutiérrez’s pencils perfectly capture the fantasy setting and associated action. The designs for Skartaris and its inhabitants are spectacular. Every panel is packed with incredible visuals that feel well thought out. Our beloved characters are fish out of water in this realm, but the creative team takes advantage of this for some incredible moments. Vicente Cifuentes’ inks are an excellent addition and really bring out the best in the artwork. In turn, Luis Guerrero’s colors are a standout throughout the issue, tying Gutiérrez and Cifuentes’ contributions together. As well done as the art is, Steve Wands’ lettering keeps the pacing smooth. While this arc is finished, Waid and company leave things somewhat open, which is great because readers would love to revisit it in the future.
Final Thoughts
Batman/Superman: World's Finest #53 is another great issue from a creative team at the top of the game. Mark Waid's writing, paired with incredible visuals from Adrián Gutiérrez, Vicente Cifuentes, Luis Guerrero, and Steve Wands, delivers an exciting fantasy adventure that gives Robin another turn in the spotlight.
