Star Trek: Zero Point #1

Recap
Celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary with Raffi's newest adventure!
Review
Star Trek: Zero Point follows Raffi Musiker as she is asked to captain a ship on a top secret project to prevent threats to the Federation that have been predicted by an artificial intelligence called Sybil.
Sybil was developed in response to the Borg/Changeling attacks on Frontier day seen in Star Trek: Picard season 3. In a move that feels a little manipulative, the Federation asks Raffi to lead the project given her own (trauma-fueled) interest in preventing such an event from happening again. The only person on her crew who is cleared to know about the project is her first officer, Tendi, who expresses concern about trusting a machine’s judgement, but, for now, is deferential to Raffi’s judgement.
This issue seems like it is setting up potentially interesting conflicts between Tendi and Raffi with each other and against the judgement of Starfleet. I am interested in seeing how Raffi’s own neuroticism will play against the Federation’s neuroticism and paranoia, and how the crew will react to dangerous missions while being kept in the dark of their purpose.
It is an interesting concept lost a little in the telling. The comic suffers from the setting up of a storyline: it is mostly boring logistics. I also don’t feel the it captures the voices of the characters as I know them, even if years have passed off-screen.
The art complements the story well, and if I had not been reading to review, I would have been satisfied looking the art and maybe skimming through the words to feel I had read the comic.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the comic is a little disappointing, but I am interested in seeing where it goes from here.
