Who Was Terry Sloane, the Original Mister Terrific?
Terry Sloane was the first to assume the Mister Terrific identity, created by Charles Reizenstein and Hal Sharp. Sloane first appeared in Sensation Comics #1 (1942). Like Michael, Terry had considerable wealth and was an athletic genius. However, the young Sloane, like Arlington, searched for a higher meaning and greater purpose for his life as a result of his early successes.
Terry found his purpose after helping a young woman whose brother got involved with crime. Terry decided to help at-risk youth by using his influence to guide them in a positive direction and to help prevent crime. Soon after, he got an invitation to join the Justice Society of America.
Terry’s defining motto, “Fair Play,” defined his views of moral fairness and integrity and his support for equal opportunities. While he eventually passed on, his mission lived on through Michael Holt, who adopted his identity and cause.
What Does Fair Play Mean to Mister Terrific?
“Fair Play” is the moral code that creates the basis for Mister Terrific’s character. Initially, the phrase was coined by Terry Sloane, and it refers to fairness, being personally responsible and being respectful towards others. This is something that Michael endorses because in his opinion, justice means more than just defeating criminals.
Michael depicts a type of justice that incorporates a high sense of responsibility and accountability towards others. This is demonstrated most obviously in the way he engages the Spectre.
Michael integrates the principles of “Fair Play” into all his fields of endeavor, including science and his work as a superhero. Here again, this means for Michael, being a hero and having superpowers means that one should be responsible and accountable for one’s actions. Being a hero means one should be a guardian of the people, but at the same time, the methods used should distinguish justice from revenge.
Mister Terrific Fair Play Costume and Its Meaning
Mister Terrific’s costume is known for its black and white design, T-shaped mask, and Fair Play wording. These aspects relate to the principles passed down from Terry Sloane. The costume uses highly advanced nanotechnology to allow him to be invisible to various electronic surveillance systems.
Initially, Michael’s Mr Terrific leather jacket was part of a more casual outfit consisting of a pair of jeans and sunglasses. A black bomber jacket, which was adopted later, also displayed the words “Fair Play” and tied into Terry’s legacy. He then also adopted the black and white superhero uniform.
In Superman (2025), the Mr. Terrific costume has Edi Gathegi portraying the character in a way that still embodies the elements of the character that he had in the comics, such as his mask, dark and tactical outfit, and signature branding.
