5 Anime’s To Watch This Halloween

Junji Ito Maniac

This unsettling anthology tells 20 short stories by horror manga creator Junji Ito in anime form.

Miko is a typical high school student whose life turns upside down when she suddenly starts to see gruesome and hideous monsters. Despite being completely terrified, Miko continues with her daily life, pretending not to notice the horrors surrounding her. She must endure the fear to keep herself and her friend Hana out of danger, even if that means facing the absolute worst. Blending comedy and horror, Mieruko-chan tells the story of a girl who tries to deal with the paranormal by acting indifferently.

Tsukiko Sagi, a shy character designer who created the immensely popular pink dog Maromi, is pressured to repeat her success. As she walks home one night, she is attacked by an elementary school boy on inline skates. Two police detectives, Keiichi Ikari and Mitsuhiro Maniwa, are assigned to the case. They suspect that Tsukiko is lying about the attack until they receive word of a second victim.

A young man named Koichi Sakakibara transfers to a new school, where he finds himself drawn into a mystery involving a mysterious girl and a series of gruesome deaths.

The mysterious, yellow-masked Storyteller is a man whose true name and origin are both unknown. He appears at dusk where children gather and recites sinister tales based on Japanese urban legends, to which his young audience eerily intakes. However, the Storyteller is no ordinary teller of tales. He incorporates a kamishibai, a traditional paper-scrolling device, to add visuals to his already demented narration.
