Recap

What if you had the power to switch bodies with someone? What if there was an ability to turn invisible? Or to float away like a balloon? Maybe even have the ability of telekinesis? But then, what happens if you need to keep those powers a secret? What if the government ends up trying to experiment on you until you go mad? What if there was a school that kept you safe? A school that will keep you hidden from the people that will take you. A school that was filled with people just like you all ready to use their powers or will be on the brink of having their powers awakened.

This is what is happening in Charlotte, an anime that follows Otosaka and the Student Council members of Hoshinoumi Academy (Star Ocean Academy). They try to help others that are emerging with their own abilities, but what happens when things go awry? When the plans that have been made in the past comes full-frontal to the present day?

SPOILER WARNING!

Review

Otosaka is nothing but a narcissist and using his own powers for selfish gain. Only using his powers to get into a good high school, starting fights with people he doesn’t like, and to win over a girl he likes. All these to for his own personal gain, using his powers, for this reason, catches the attention of Nao Tomori, the Student Council President. Taking Otosaka into the academy to keep an eye on him along with him helping to find other people with abilities as well. This drastically changes his attitude towards life, allowing him to open his eyes to the world around him. While Otosaka adjusts to his new school along with his new friends, things come to light, one that reveals that Otosaka true ability isn’t just transferring his consciousness to another person, but he is able to take their powers away, this ability is called, “Plunder.” While this does come to light, we finally see that everything that they had all known, the school, the student council, even the fact that a boy named, Takehito Kumagami, has been with them since the school had been established. While Takehito Kumagami knew all along that Otosaka did in fact have a brother, a brother that was long forgotten and erased from his memories. By the end, we see that not everything is what it seems, and we see that Otosaka must take away every single ability user.

While the anime has its ups and downs, it did give us tears during episode six, the death of Ayumi Otosaka, the little sister of Otosaka came as a shock to us all. While we knew that something dramatic would happen as she got her powers, we never expected that she would die as a result to them. We see how Otosaka goes into despair in losing his little sister. The moment of falling into the deep end and having lost everything that he has ever known. The little sister that he had taken care of, completely gone now. The whole episode helped us moved forward with him as he came back from the darkness that he was putting himself in. This helped us connect with the character as in some way we have lost someone close to us as well. The grief that he felt, was something some of us, if not all of us, has felt before.

The anime gave us more insight, however, the plot holes do happen sparingly. One of them being why Nao Tomori was being bullied and beaten up, another is who was the girl that sliced at Otosaka eye, rendering him unable to time leap. And why is he unable to time leap but can still use Plunder? Many of these plot holes tend to confuse the watcher. Yet, it’s completely overlooked in the end. There are more, but those are the main ones that stood out to me.

Final Thoughts

While the anime does have its plot holes and the storyline can be confusing at times with situations coming out of the blue. It is still one to enjoy and to add to your anime list, the story can be an interesting one if you overlook the plot holes. While the animation is great, and the ending did bring tears to my eyes, there is still the issue of how the anime progressed and how many questions went unanswered. While this does play a role in whether to watch it or not, I still do recommend watching the anime. So let’s go ahead and add Charlotte to our list!
