Log Horizon
Recap
The world of this game is one that has always been enjoyable, one that has been entered many times no matter what the console would be. We enjoy the games and we see the characters that we have built up along with forming groups or guilds and lasting friendships. A start of a genre of anime begam many years ago and when the idea had been planted many others came forward. The world of gaming has been stripped for any player to leave the game, forcing them to stay within the game to live out their days. And while trapped within, they must find a way to survive and to thrive in the world that had only been a game to them.
We are welcome into the gaming world of Log Horizon.
Review
While the story of Log Horizon was one that was very similar to Sword Art Online, it also gave us another way of looking into the game. SAO’s perspective was to look for a way to escape the game and be free from the system that they had been trapped in. Log Horizon gave us another aspect of being trapped within a game. Instead of looking for a way to escape, they learned to accept their fate and to build a life within the game. Log Horizon’s message is that living within the game is more than just that, it can be a life to keep going forward with. While the anime had its up and downs, it becomes extremely repetative with the episodes that come forward. The anime does have a theme of trying to co-exist with those that are nonplayers, and while this has become a recurring theme in the anime, it can become rather tiring to watch as the same problems continue to happen. Along with the excitement of being inside a game, many other problems seem to occur with the death of players (only to respawn later), which is something that SAO didn’t have.
We have the many wonderful characters that have graced our screens, from a mage to an assassin, the story of love interest and fighting alongside friends are themes and stories that stay in our minds. Guilds are formed and tensions spike with enemies that are just around the corner. The opening song is “Database” by Man with a Mission; the song opens with many of the main characters revolving around the story. Each one displays their powers as they fight with those that seem to want to disturb the order of peace. The ending song is called “Your song” by Yunchi. The song follows that of the assassin name Akatsuki and her everyday life with the guild members that she has learned to trust. We can see a hint of her love for Shiroe the mage that has been the center of Log Horizon.
Final Thoughts
You can catch Log Horizon on Crunchyroll with the sub version while Hulu has both sub and dubbed versions of the anime. This may not be one that will be high on the list of anime that I would watch, but it is one to see as it is a different view of players in a gaming world. The life of a gamer is always one to look into as they fight to survive in a world that never belonged to them.
