Dracula: Sovereign of the Damned
Recap
This will be such a blast from the past for many on here, but who doesn’t love a good Dracula story filled with love, fights and the source of all good and evil? We also find out much more about Dracula and his past in this one. One that is filled with turmoil and Satan themselves, cause, why not drop in some Hell in there.
This anime is loosely based on Marvel's award-winning Tomb of Dracula series.
Review
Dracula has lived in torment from being turned into a vampire when he died during a battle with Satan. Living his life in loneliness and cruelty, he finally meets his match when a woman that was meant to be the wife of Satan was taken by Dracula himself. He was caught up by her beauty, but he could not bring himself to be cruel to her, to take from her. The concept of Dracula could feel love has always been played upon in many different medias. This one while old is still a goodie, the way that they translate the love that he has for her, and the fact that he changes himself to adjust to her life and lifestyle is always wonderful to see. The retelling of their basic love story was so cute, and to even see that Dracula is such a girl’s girl when it comes down to it and the respect that he shows to his wife. We all know that Dracula was way ahead of his time during these movies.
The group of vampire slayers that follow his journey as well, as they try to understand what he is and what is going on with him. While the grudge they hold on to him is warranted and can be understood, while Dracula may have changed for his wife, it does not absolve him from the pain of the past. The story that follows with the fight against being who he is and what he is, the moral grey area of trying to understand how we can stop the evil in itself. Dracula’s cruelty can be shown in many ways during the ending when many of his “creations” turn against him for abandoning or harming them.
While I will say the animations and the voice acting is a bit tough to get through, it’s still such a good anime to watch during the spooky season. It’s still filled with the adventure and backstory that we do enjoy about the Dracula that we know and love. The story that moves forward with it does have some plot holes and I do wish they would have touched more on the characters. While I can understand why they wanted to focus on certain characters, there were many others that still cause a bit of a confusion on why they were there. While the story does come together, it does leave you wanting more of these characters and their own backstory.
Final Thoughts
The aspect of Dracula has been across the board with books, tv shows, and movies. This is one that is not meant to be skipped because it does touch base on the emotions of Dracula and who he is entirely. You can catch Dracula Sovereign of the Damned on Youtube in dub for many to watch and enjoy.
