Sparks of Tomorrow
Recap
On July 18, 2019 an arson attack devastated Kyoto Animation (KyoAni). Shocking the world of anime and mourning the loss of many. Yet, they rose together and stepped forward stronger. And brought many beloved favorites… except a pause had been placed on one anime: Sparks of Tomorrow.
Review
We follow Kihachi Sakamoto through the Age of Steam, everything powered by water and steam. Masking the streets and sky with it as he walks with his older brother, Seiroku Sakamoto, through these very streets. Once left alone briefly to show Kihachi what electricity could do, that spark happens. Kihachi sees the beauty of the light powered in a small bulb. Thrown into a different world of light instead of the clouds of steam that masked the beauty of it. But, the world happened, and his brother was taken away, whisking away the very ideas and books with him. This… is where it all starts now, the fallen plans that had once given Kihachi inspiration gone, and now he must do this on his own. Or at least, that is what he thought.

Sparks of Tomorrow had stepped forward after eight years of being on hiatus since the attack on KyoAni. And while many other animes and movies had been completed, this was the one animation many had been waiting for. KyoAni did not disappoint. The flow of the animation, the different art styles, even the movement of the steam that curled around the characters as they walked through the streets. The character design for many of them were unique and eye catching. From the unique expressions to the very flow of their hair as they just walk by. Even from the art style that jumps from one moment to the next gives you not just a story, but the imagination of Kihachi that he wants to bring to life. We had been prepared to fall for each character, and KyoAni delivered just that.

The opening for Sparks of Tomorrow is “Eureka Evrika” performed by Luna Goami while the ending theme song is “Soarin’” by Ginger Root. Both songs really does capture the very essence of what we will be seeing in Sparks of Tomorrow. The direction that the anime is pulling forward I have no doubt that there will be many more secrets, laughter, and moments of beauty within the anime. Hitomi Komo plays such a wonderful part in the anime as well, with each song weaving through the anime as many events transpires between characters. A strong part of me sees that each character will have their own moments that will have music swelling behind them, paired with the animation that KyoAni did. It will bring to life the just how much these two work so well together.
Final Thoughts
Sparks of Tomorrow is streaming on Netflix, episode two will be airing on July 12th, and we will definitely be seeing more of these characters. The age of steam may be ending as the age of electricity has been held in the hands of a boy that was given light. Will they prevail or fall into the world of steam once more?
