Review
We all know the Terminator moves, tv shows, and anime’s that have come out. The way we all have obsessed over them when they first appear in the big screen. Line from line we can quote them and still be surprised by the intensity that they showed us. However, Terminator Zero takes you through its twist and turns with each episode they present to you. The story compels you to look past Skynet as there is another AI that has Judgement Day in their hands now.
Kokoro (voiced by Rosario Dawson/Atsumi Tanezaki) is an AI that was created by Malcolm Lee (voiced by André Holland/Yuuya Uchida). Malcolm is haunted by his past and strives to create a better future. However, in order to create this better future that he is so desperate to see, he has left the future of humanity in the hands of Kokoro, an AI that is weighing the balance of allowing Skynet to destroy them or to save humanity.
The story is an interact one, filled with doubt of who will survive and if the Terminator (voiced by Timothy Olyphant/Yasuhiro Mamiya) will actually succeed in his plan in destroying Kokoro before she can make that choice. But the twist doesn’t stop there, for when one moment falls another one is picked up. We see that someone is being sent back in time to try and save Malcolm from the choices he is making and from the Terminator.
Eiko (voiced by Sonoya Mizuno/Toa Yukinari) is from the year 2022 and has been a resistant fighter against the machines. She is chosen to go back in time just like the Terminator to save humanity from not just Skynet but from Kokoro too. But, like all stories, things don’t go as planned when Eiko lands in Japan. She must find Malcolm only to find Malcolm’s housekeeper and nanny for his children, Misaki (voiced by Sumalee Montano/Saori Hayami), but Misaki has secrets of her own, ones that she doesn’t even know about. Malcolm’s kids run for their lives as the Terminator is after them, only to have Misaki and Eiko try and protect them from the danger the Terminator posses.
Kenta Lee (voiced by Armani Jackson/Hiro Shimono) a smart child and the oldest of the siblings struggles with the absence of his father, not know that Malcolm is trying to
convince an AI to save the world. He enjoys inventing things and taking them apart to see how they work. A smart boy that will later have to make harder choices for not just himself but for his family.
Reika Lee (voiced by Gideon Adlon/Miyuki Sato) is mourning the loss of her mother, feeling trapped from the loss. She is headstrong, and her fights with her brothers are very sibling-like. She is the first to bump into the Terminator and the whirlwind of being thrown in a world where she has to learn to fight to survive it.
Hiro Lee (voiced by Carter Rockwood/Shizuka Ishigami) is the youngest of the siblings. And like all of us that are the younger siblings, we can be a bit sensitive. Hiro is just this way as he struggles in trying to appease both his brother and sister and try to keep peace between them all. But now that the world has turned upside down, he must learn that picking a side may mean going against your family.
Terminator Zero twists and turns pulls your further into the plot, the animation and action scenes are very much on par with the old movies and tv shows from the past. This is a story that you do not want to miss out on. There will be many unforgettable moments in this show, ones that if you blink you will miss it.
Final Thoughts
Terminator Zero shows a different side to a story, while the elements of the old Terminator is still there. This story has more to it then just its amazing animation, but the story draws you further into what could happen with the choices we make. And, oof, that cliffhanger, will we be seeing a second season of Terminator Zero in future? I do hope so.
