The Ancient Magus Bride
Recap
We start a beautiful story with a sad beginning about our bride, Chisa Hatori, being sold in auction for her unique magical ability. Only for the scene to cut to a man walking into the auction house filled with a mysterious aura around him. A single red cloth covering his head, yet, the goat horns are still noticeable, very hard to miss those. As the viewers, we see the way he walks onto the stage without a care in the world as he announces the price he is paying for our young heroine. While they are taken to another room, their small talk turns to an outburst as Chisa claims that she has never been fortunate in her life. The mysterious man, that we now know as Elias Ainsworth, states that this will soon change as he takes Chisa away from the auction house. Her confusion and curiosity as Elias have appointed her as his new apprentice. We begin our sad and beautiful journey between the Mage and his new apprentice.
Review
While Chisa is quiet and reserved, along, with mistrusting about Elias and those around her because of her ability and her dark past she still lets her curiosity fly. She has much to learn while she begins her path with Elias as she is brought back to her new home. Elias is filled with warmth, yet, he is blunt to the point of being able to hurt other feelings. The roughness, in the beginning, was a bit worrisome until you see that it is only in his nature to be this way. While not always agreeing on the way he becomes possessive of Chisa and yet, still understanding that he is only this way due to his other half. Elias is known as the Thorn Mage, casting thorns and shadows during his brilliant display of magic, the control he has over what he can do. We see him grow as a character and protector towards Chisa during the ongoing episodes as they become closer to one another. Chisa, however, still reserved by the man that had bought her still has much to learn about the Thorn Mage and the many people that have come into her life. They try her best to teach her the way of their own magical abilities while she still learns to manage her own ability.
Sleigh Beggy a very rare magical caster that absorbs and cast large quantity of magical energies, however, the cost of being such a caster is a very short lifespan. Many of the mages that have learned this about our Chisa have become very sympathetic towards her. They have gathered together trying their best to stop the weakening of Chisa body, however, she has become somewhat reckless at the time. While she believes that she is selfish when she is more selfless and sacrifices herself for the people that she loves and cares for. However, this causes her to become hurt for putting herself
in the middle of danger and throwing away her life. Elias does his best to protect her, but there is so much that the Thorn Mage can do for the girl. The mage seems to have his own flaws too, hiding his past and seems to never speak of the problems that surround both Chisa and Elias. These become a recurring problem during the anime and a bit annoying at times when it comes to their feelings. As a watcher, I was constantly grumbling about their problem that could easily be solved if they just sit down and talk.
The opening song “Here” by JUNNA was beautiful how they incorporated the darkness and the light along with scenes of the series into the opening. “Wa-cycle-“by Hana Itoki shows another side of the anime with Chisa studying to be a mage and her everyday life. The anime is beautifully done and will draw in many of the viewers to see if the love between Elias and Chisa is strong enough to withstand the battles they face. The many characters that come along and moves the story forward is a refreshing taste to this anime as they walk into the lives of our protagonist. From mages to enemies turned to allies, it is something to watch as the 24-episode swirls with emotions and magical beauty.
Final Thoughts
While this short anime is beautiful, many are wishing for a second season, fortunately, an announcement has been made that a second season will be coming forward in 2019. For now, we do have an OVA that spans only 3 episodes about Chisa and her life when she was much younger. It is also a must watch as the main anime played a small part of this OVA. You can find this anime on Crunchyroll and Funimation both subbed and dubbed for those that are wanting to watch. The Ancient Magus Bride is one to add to your anime list.
