Review
Haruka Sakura has lived his life having been teased and pushed to the edge because of his looks. Those that whisper behind his back while he walked along and unable to do anything about his appearance. However, when push comes to shove, he was able to get stronger with the bullying he had endured. He comes to Furin to enroll so that he could be the strongest and best just by using his fist to keep his life going. But, what happens when he notices that Furin isn’t just about fighting but about learning to be accepted by your peers.
Sakura must learn that in order to take the top spot in Furin you have to have the people’s ears and hearts. How can he command those when he secludes himself and pushes those away from him? Sakura is ruled by his past and flinches away from the people trying to reach for him. But, little by little, you can see him opening up to the people that are fighting side by side with him. While Sakura is a classic tsundere that isn’t able to communicate or express himself properly when he is shown any type of affection.
He tries his best throughout the series to understand those around him, and while he is focused on aiming to the top, he starts to learn that aiming for the top is harder than he expected. When he finally meets the top fighter, Hajime Umemiya, he needs to understand how the leader of Furin works and what it is to be a leader.
Sakura ends up begrudgingly befriending, Akihiko Nirei, a boy his age that is not the strongest but aims to try and be there for the town and the people. While their meeting was filled with jokes and tension. Nirei attempts to do his best to save a girl in trouble, only for him to fail, but his attempts are noted by Sakura who does compliment him. While Nirei knows he isn’t the strongest, he still strives to be in Furin due to his past encounter with one of their students. While Nirei and Sakura strike up a forced friendship and head to Furin High School, their first day is, well, eventful.
Wind Breaker does take a lot of its animation into consideration, CloverWorks does a good job in making the fighting movements fluid. The powerful moves that each fight takes were very detailed. The opening theme song is “Zettai Reido” (????, “Absolute Zero”), performed by Natori, while the ending theme song is “Muteki” (??, “Unbeatable”), performed by Young Kee. The series ended after 13 episodes but will be back for a second season in 2025, it has been dubbed on Crunchyroll.
Final Thoughts
Wind Breaker is filled with funny moments and moments that can be rough for those that are struggling with acceptance after the trauma that was dealt. Sakura views and struggles are very real to those that have dealt with these moments. To try and break free from them is hard and it can be shown throughout the series. This will be an anime to watch out for when the Crunchyroll awards comes around.
