Tartarus #5: A Full Moon Rising

Tartarus #5

While Tartarus #5 (@j_xmas @NewJackCole, @campbellletters) may focus on an eclipse, neither writing nor art eclipses the other. Bursting with intricate twists and elaborate art, it’s an ambitious albeit flawed ending to a fascinating first arc. Where will Tartarus take Tilde next?

King of Nowhere #5: Nowhere Near Perfect

Boom! Entertainment, Comic Book ReviewsBy Lillian HochwenderSeptember 2, 2020Leave a comment

King of Nowhere #5

King of Nowhere #5 (Prince, Jenkins, Jenkins, Andworld Design) finishes this series as it began: hard to put down due to a constant hope that it might improve. Yet, lovable characters and the book’s off-kilter artistic brilliance remain undercut by its unbalanced story and uninteresting protagonist.

Hedra (One-Off): It’s The End of the World (And I Feel Fine)

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Lillian HochwenderAugust 22, 2020Leave a comment

Hedra (One-Off)

Hedra ( @jesselonergans ) is a beautifully rendered, retrofuturistic tale that reminds readers that there is always hope even in the grimmest of circumstances.

Big Girls #1: A Femin-ish Kaiju Crisis

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Lillian HochwenderAugust 17, 2020Leave a comment

Big Girls #1

In Big Girls #1 (Howard, Fonografiks), 300-foot-tall Ember fights against the patriarchy-as-kaiju. Yet, Howard’s bioessentialist metaphor is battling itself, as is his striking yet simultaneously underwhelming art. One can only hope Big Girls comes into its own with time.

Space Bear OGN: Getting Kids (And Adults) Hooked On Comics

Boom! Entertainment, Comic Book ReviewsBy Lillian HochwenderAugust 1, 2020Leave a comment

Space Bear OGN

Space Bear (Young) may be silent, but it has a big story to tell. It’s a vibrant, charming sci-fi about communication and compassion that offers children a chance to learn, while giving comic-loving adults a way to share a medium they love. It’s also plain good fun.

Tartaus #4: Lives Hanging In The Balance

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Lillian HochwenderJuly 31, 2020Leave a comment

Tartarus #4

In Tartarus #4 (Christmas, Cole, and Campbell), every character is forced to question what sacrifices are worth making. For readers, it’s more than worth sacrificing $4 and an hour of one’s day to read such a beautifully executed book.

Ant-Man #5: Reaching Our Final Pest-ination

Comic Book Reviews, MarvelBy Lillian HochwenderJune 18, 2020Leave a comment

Ant-Man #5

Ant-Man #5 (Wells, Burnett, Spicer, Petit) is a larger-than-life finish to a playful and striking miniseries. Not as comedic as its first issue, or emotionally hefty as its fourth (R.I.P. Pam), it’s nonetheless a satisfying, fast-paced page-turner.

The Ludocrats #1: Sirs, You Are Being Wicked

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Lillian HochwenderMay 20, 2020

The Ludocrats #1

The Ludocrats (Gillen, Rossignol, Stokely, Bonvillain, Cowles) is gratuitously violent, artistically inspired, fourth-wall-obliterating, steampunk/fantasy Saturday-morning-cartoon-meets-Asterix for people who love profanity. Is it ludicrous? Most definitely. Is it funny? That’s subjective.

Ant-Man #4: Big Bangs and Tiny Tragedies

Comic Book Reviews, MarvelBy Lillian HochwenderMay 18, 2020

Ant-Man #4

Ant-Man #4 (Wells, Burnett, Spicer, Petit) may be stuck on the web, but it’s as thoroughly vibr-ant and ant-ertaining as ever.
