Die #3: Beautiful Disaster

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Patrick LaguaFebruary 12, 2019Leave a comment

Die # 3

The way in which Gillen chooses to depict a new layer of the structure underpinning this ‘fantasy’ world in this issue provides some very hefty emotional payoffs that is both extremely affecting and just…weird, but nonetheless satisfying.

The Wicked and the Divine #41: Getting The Band Back Together

The Wicked and the Divine #41

There are plenty of substantive emotional beats and character moments to be had in this installment; ones that feel truly earned extremely satisfying.

Die #2: Critical Success Roll

Die # 2

The depth and breadth of thought that went into the design and conceptualization of this world and the characters inhabiting it is impressive, particularly in how it gets baked into the story being told.

The Wicked and the Divine # 40

Everything appears to be on the table and no expense will be spared as this 40-plus issue story races to it’s inevitable conclusion.

Die # 1 Die. The word is Die.

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Patrick LaguaDecember 9, 2018Leave a comment

Die # 1

Gillen and Hans lay just enough pathos and a tremendous sense of a lost ‘something’ that the characters (and by extension I) want to recover that I’m in for the long haul to see how all the questions Gillen asks gets answered.

Farmhand #5: Farm Fresh, Juicy, Comic book Goodness

Comic Book Reviews, Image Comics, NewsBy Patrick LaguaNovember 21, 2018Leave a comment

Farmhand #5

The comic takes the classic themes of science gone amok, of humans not taking a moment to ask ‘should’ instead of ‘could’ that’s been explored in other stories like Jurassic Park or Battlestar Galactica and makes it feel fresh, relevant and fabulously comic-booky in all the right ways.

The Wicked and the Divine Funnies Special #1: Dogs, Chairs, Mysteries and Cats OH MY!

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Patrick LaguaNovember 13, 2018Leave a comment

The Wicked and the Divine Funnies Special # 1

As the main WicDiv saga races to its final conclusion (the final arc starts next month), this delightful stress reliever arrives to serve as both a palette cleanser and a summation of sorts of the saga so far.

Wildstorm #18: Moving Chess Pieces Around

Comic Book Reviews, DC EntertainmentBy Patrick LaguaNovember 8, 2018Leave a comment

Wildstorm # 18

The Wildstorm # 18 serves as a pivot issue that sees Ellis arranging all his key players in the story to prepare for the concluding arc of this 24 part epic.  While mostly a set-up issue, it still entertains as Ellis proceeds to put everyone where he needs them to be for what is sure to be an action packed end game.

X-Men Black Emma Frost #1: It is Not Enough To Pray Without Ceasing

Comic Book Reviews, MarvelBy Patrick LaguaNovember 3, 2018Leave a comment

X-Men Black Emma Frost # 1

Leah Williams loves the HELL out of Emma, and it shows in every panel and well-crafted thought balloon. She GETS this character; what makes her tick, why she does the things she does and just how deep and canny her strategizing is.

Runaways #14: A Nice Fluffy Piece of Cake

Comic Book Reviews, MarvelBy Patrick LaguaOctober 23, 2018Leave a comment

Runaways # 14

A good ‘snack’, if not an entirely satisfying issue; the Old Lace parts definitely stands out as the better, if not too necessary, half of this two-in-one installment.

The Wicked and the Divine 1373 Special # 1 Lucifer (Medieval Remix)

Comic Book Reviews, Image ComicsBy Patrick LaguaOctober 5, 2018Leave a comment

The Wicked and the Divine 1373 Special #1

Lucifer takes center stage in another WicDiv remix production that deftly re-imagines the contemporary pantheon in a medieval setting. It’s a satisfying, though at places, somewhat confusing installment that hints at some heartbreaking things to come in the series’ main story.

The Wildstorm #17: Tacking Into the Bleed

Comic Book Reviews, DC EntertainmentBy Patrick LaguaSeptember 24, 2018Leave a comment

The Wildstorm #17

It’s a delight to see how Ellis updates these characters by slowly peeling away the layers to show us how he’s remixed them for this latest go-around.  This issue features some choice bits of this storytelling approach.
