Super 7 has just dropped Wave 1 of their deluxe edition of “Invincible” action figures. I was not aware these were coming out. I was in GameStop purchasing the new “Wolverine” game, and I always look around when I am in GameStop because I so rarely frequent it anymore. (That is a review itself). When I saw the figures, I of course picked up the figure and took a glance at the back first to see what the wave looked like. I started doing that first when I noticed how much money I was losing buying entire waves of figures I did not want.
The first thing that impressed me was the wave itself. Even though only two different characters were available. My first thought was how strong the wave is. Invincible, Thragg, Allen the Alien, and Angstrom Levy. I was unsure if I wanted to add this to my collection so I put them down and said, “If they are here in a week, I will get them. Sure enough, a week later I go to check, and they are right there. So, I pick them up and take a real look this time around, and I am impressed with the work that Super 7 has done.
The invincible figure looks just like cartoons and comics. A snarl on his face, ready to fight. Fist balled up. The scale is about 6 inches for this figure in particular. I know the Allen the Alien figure is 7 inches I do not think that is an inconsistency on Super 7’s part. I think because Allen is taller than Invincible, they were trying to make it as authentic as possible. These figures are good for posing in fight form or battle form. Toy photographers,, you will have fun with these for sure.
Those are the positives. As for the negatives, the price point is tricky. We are headed towards 30-dollar elite figures; there is no getting around that. Here is one of the issues with Super 7’s latest offering. Marvel Legends one-packs start at 24.99, but they have multiple accessories. Extra hands, feet, and head depend on the character, obviously. But you do get your bang for your buck. I have always found the 2- and 3-packs worth more than just the single, but that’s me. I also like obscure characters.
With this wave of figures, there are no accessories included. So, if you want Invincible with just a regular look on his face, you are out of luck your stuck with the battle face. Hands, feet, nothing. Now, one can argue they don’t really use weapons in this universe. These characters are all OP, which is very true, but to put your weight down and immediately charge 30 bucks is a bold move in my opinion. It does make me wonder if they will stay at these price points with other waves? Or will they keep going up as long as people buy them? I will be honest, I am in the collecting community; no one was talking about these figures. That right there is a problem unto itself. So, Super 7 has some work to do.
This is not like the McFarlane “Mortal Kombat” figures that came in with bad hype and left out in a whimper. The quality was bad; the price point was high, and the accessories were nowhere to be found. The quality with these figures is good! No denying that, but the price point and lack of accessories as of press time are what will hold these figures back from becoming legendary, in my opinion. There is plenty more from this IP coming and plenty of waves they have left to correct what this first wave did not get right.
