This week McFarlane Toys released their Amazon Exclusive Gold Label 3-Pack with Clayface, Batman, and Batwoman. While Clayface and Batman are re-releases, fans of the DC Multiverse series will be sure to appreciate Batwoman being added to the roster of characters for their collection.
The DC Multiverse line has come a long way since McFarlane Toys took over the DC property in 2019, and with the renewed contract with DC Entertainment to 2025, it’s always appreciated when they release characters other than different variations of Batman. (Don’t get me wrong, I probably have more versions of Batman than I would like to admit, but the DC Universe is rich with options of characters.)
One of the common critiques among toy collectors of the DC Multiverse line has consistently been the lack of women characters. It’s not uncommon to look at one’s shelves and notice how disproportionate the demographics are for men and women heroes and villains—however, the Gold Label Clayface, Batman, and Batwoman 3-pack will certainly help change that.
Let’s start this review with the packaging. Personally, I am not one to particularly care about whether or not toys have windows to display the figure inside. I know some are incredibly vocal about the transparent plastic, but c’mon, it’s toys—it’s okay to take them out of the box. When it comes to the packaging, the box is a nice clean box with the DC Multiverse Logo on the front and the comic images on the back. (For those who didn’t know, this combination is from James Tynion’s run on Detective comics.) The box itself is nothing to rave about, but it’s about what’s inside, right? So let’s dive into that.
The figures themselves are overall a welcomed addition to any DC collector’s shelves. Clayface and Batman are re-releases, however, I would argue the colors are done better this time around.
Clayface is as ugly as he should be and since he is a megafig, there is limited mobility. Given his size, he leans more into statue territory than toy, but his arms still have some mobility to look more dynamic.
The Batman figure is similar to the rebirth design from earlier in the series, but this time the colors better match the New 52 color schemes and personally I like the lighter gray. His mobility is decent and I particularly like how he sizes well with other figures. For anyone wanting a nice comic book Batman, you can’t go wrong with this figure.
The main figure—and likely why fans are picking up this 3-pack—is Batwoman and I would say she is definitely the star of the pack. For a character whose primary colors are red and black, the entire design is well done and overall a cool addition. Batwoman’s colors are a rich red and the cowl/hair design is certainly going to make her stand out in any BatFamily shelf.
While I overall would recommend this pack, buyers should be aware of some elements to be aware of.
Batwoman, as well designed as she is, is limited in “posability”—a common concern for this pack. It isn’t necessarily a deal breaker, however, without the typical mobility of more recent figures, Batwoman is hurt by the reuse of the Catwoman body buck (or figure mold). She certainly doesn’t feel as study as Batman and with the cool hair comes the cost of mobility of her head.
Interestingly, Batman has a surprising amount of quality control issues. There are obvious gaps between the cape and cowl on my figure and the hand really doesn’t like holding the grappling gun.
Finally, I never thought I would say this, but I actually missed the trading card and figure stands that McFarlane infamously includes in every figure they ship. I was surprised to open the box to find the figures, 2 batarangs, and 2 grappling guns. It’s a weird move but considering you get three figures at about $24 a piece even though separately they could be sold for more than $85 based on standard prices, collectors might have to take the bad with the good.
As an Amazon exclusive, I would recommend picking this set up sooner rather than later as exclusives can sell out. Overall, I liked all of the figures and they make a great addition to my BatFamily shelf. It’s nice to see McFarlane Toys branching out to other characters and hope this is a signal to fans that they’re going to need more shelf space.
