I have a special fondness for the collectors on Earth. They collect almost anything. They collect the coins. They collect the stamps. The collect the cars, the thimbles, the autographs, the lamps. My favorite of all, as you know well, are the comic book collectors and their brothers who collect movie memorabilia. So often the two cross over. But then there are those-who perhaps have collected it all or have vast fortunes and wealth–who can look to the fringes for items others can only dream of or stand in shock that such things exist!
Due to the nature of this edition of The Collector’s Corner it is recommended for mature audiences only. It’s rated R, bunky. NC-17. TV-MA. NSFW (whatever the hell that means). You’ll laugh. You’ll scream. You’ll run in sheer terror from these Weird Things!
Everybody loves the LEGOS, don’t they? There have been block shaped toys for hundreds of years. But in 1932 in the village of Billund, Danish inventor Ole Kirk Christiansen created the snap together, interlocking bricks and together with his 12 year old son Godtfred they set up a simple shop in 1934 and built their brand of “LEGO” which means “play well” in their Danish tongue.
By 1942 LEGO had 40 employees and their very own plastic injection molding machine…a first for the Danish who were well known for making delicious pastries. As the Christiansens continued to evolve their product, by the 1950s plastic toys still hadn’t caught on that well. In 1958 Godtfred Christiansen had perfected and patented the stud and tube configuration of LEGOS and the LEGO System Of Play had 28 sets and 8 vehicles. Unfortunately, his father did not live to see his product become a hit. Nearly 7,000 years after the invention of the wheel, in 1961 LEGO created the wheel again to add to its sets. Today, LEGO makes 300 million tiny wheels every year…more than any other wheel maker in the world!
The original LEGO sets were simple with easy to make constructs and left the rest to children’s imaginations. As time passed, more intricate sets were made where space ships and jungles and construction sites could be built. With more intricacy LEGO expanded its base to older kids who enjoyed the challenges of the toy.
Today, LEGO has expanded its brands to include such franchises as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, DC and Marvel Comics. But most importantly it has brought back adults who enjoyed the toy as kids and who now will spend big bucks for the challenge of figuring out the puzzle of which damn part goes where to create Star Destroyers and Death Stars. Why, I even spent some considerable time with a human who, to this day, collects and builds the most challenging LEGO sets available. There were even some limited edition sets which may or may not have had LEGO’s blessing such as the Breaking Bad Meth Lab or The Strip Club.
Certainly LEGOS have not become an “adults only” product. But it certainly illustrates how LEGO has become more popular than it has ever been with a theme park in California bearing its name and most recently a television series which challenged contestants to create elaborate works. And for those longing for the original simplicity, people can buy giant size LEGO recycle bins.
