The Marvel Legends Series Wolverine (Brown Suit) is Almost Perfect

The Marvel Legends Series Wolverine (Brown Suit) figure is based on the “classic brown-and-tan” suit from the multiverse-hopping scene in Deadpool & Wolverine. At a retail price of $27.99, the figure includes a set of clawless hands, an unmasked neck piece, and an alternate neck that reveals Wolverine’s skin. At the 1:12 scale, the figure stands at 6 inches (15 centimeters) tall.

Despite appearing onscreen for under a minute in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine, Wolverine’s brown-and-tan suit became one of the film’s most talked-about costume designs. During the film, Deadpool travels the multiverse to find a Wolverine to replace the deceased Logan of his own universe. During these escapades, Wade encounters an unmasked Wolverine variant wearing the “classic brown-and-tan” suit from the comics. Deadpool remarks that he “fought the Hulk” in this outfit, only for the Jade Giant to appear and swat him into a tree. For a brief moment, Hulk is reflected in Wolverine’s claws, recreating the iconic cover of Incredible Hulk #340. This suit appears in the movie for under a minute, but it took the internet by storm. Many fans online preferred Wolverine’s brown suit over the film’s primary blue one. Fans loved the suit so much that Hasbro turned the costume into a figure for the second wave of Deadpool & Wolverine Marvel Legends releases.

And what a great collectible Hasbro created. The design is solid. From the dark lines to the slight bumpy texture of the costume, every detail from the movie suit is translated onto the plastic toy. The sculpt work is very well done; Hasbro’s new pinless joints really smooth out the limbs, adding a greater level of immersion. The brown and tan contrast is rendered sharply on the paint job. Furthermore, this Wolverine has an impressive range of articulation, including double-jointed knees, double-jointed elbows, waist joints, chest joints, and extensive shoulder mobility. As a result, the articulation allows for dynamic and expressive poses. As with all other Marvel Legends releases, the plastic feels durable and sturdy.

However, this Marvel Legends Wolverine has one glaring setback. While the figure includes an alternate neck designed to recreate Wolverine’s unmasked appearance from the film, the figure does not include an alternate head sculpt. To recreate the proper look from the movie, where Hugh Jackman is unmasked in the suit, another Marvel Legends Wolverine figure has to be purchased. Not including a Hugh Jackman head sculpt with the figure is an incredibly odd choice by Hasbro that sets the figure back. Whether the decision is a result of cost-cutting, tooling budgets, or licensing constraints, the result is the same: the figure cannot recreate the look it’s based on from the movie without a separate purchase.

At a retail price of $27.99, it is mildly more expensive than the $24.99 of the previous wave’s Wolverine figure. The lack of an alternative head doesn’t really justify the price increase either. Those who own the original yellow-and-blue figure from the first Deadpool & Wolverine wave will find this works well as a complementary figure. The alternate head on the aforementioned figure will serve to increase the accuracy of the brown-and-tan figure. That being said, the brown-and-tan suit stands well enough on its own merits that buyers who don’t care about screen accuracy won’t feel the need to track down the original blue-and-yellow Wolverine.

Overall, this Marvel Legends figure is a strong release. It looks great, it moves great, and it feels great. But the lack of an alternative head prevents it from being a perfect figure. Nonetheless, this is an easy buy for anybody who is a fan of the character.
