Review

The title for Above Snakes #3 is: Birds of a Feather now, immediately, the song of the same name by PHISH pops into my head and provides the soundtrack for this review. However, the song and Lewis’ message couldn’t be more different.

We catch up with Dirt and Speck and immediately dive into some light-hearted comedy that sets up issue #3 as the best offering so far in the series. Without giving too much away, we dive a little deeper into their relationship and possibly come to the realization that Speck is Dirt, and Dirt is Speck. This relationship is so dysfunctional, but it works! After reading this issue, I don’t see how the reader doesn’t come to the conclusion that they absolutely need each other, but neither will admit it. We constantly find ourselves on the Sean Lewis rollercoaster, and it’s only getting faster and that much more fun.

About a quarter way through the book, our “heroes” set out on a journey in the woods for Speck. Yes, for Speck. As they enter the woods, there’s a panel that Hayden Sherman (art) and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou absolutely KILL IT! Total poster moment, I had to do a double take. Otsmane-Elhaou continues to amaze the senses with his radiant talent in such a way that when you see his work, all you can say is, “KOBE!” And in that respect, you absolutely know when Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou letters a book. Hayden Sherman is a must-have for any long box. You know his style, art, and colors; if Above Snakes were a silent book, it would still be a must-have. I love his “no-fluff” approach. What you see is what you get. And what you’re getting is a stunning book.

Final Thoughts

A STRONG book in the series and my favorite so far. We have enough adjectives in the review on how strong this creative team is. Plain and simple, Above Snakes is a series you should be reading.
