Recap

After a journey hell-bent on revenge, Dirt is ready for it all to be over with.

Review

Dirt has been through the wringer these past couple of issues but if we’ve learned anything is that he’s grown by leaps and bounds; this issue brings that to center stage. ABOVE SNAKES is more than a redemption story. It’s a love story, it’s life lessons, and at times it serves as a mirror.

The book opens with a great dialogue between Dirt and Tombs; however, Hayden Sherman absolutely steals the show in the first few pages of this issue. The coffin shot with Dirt is poster material. He rages all through this book with brilliant colors that capture all of the emotions of the story. I’ve said a few times in my reviews of ABOVE SNAKES that Sherman’s art is so spectacular that this could be a silent book and still be just as badass as is now.  As the story continues to unfold, we get the deepest look into Dirt’s pure love for not only his wife but the value of life. The greatest question that this issue brings up (in my opinion) is what has greater value, physical love or spiritual love, and how far are you willing to go to protect that love and in what form?

As the story wraps up, we are reminded of Sean Lewis’ uncanny ability at storytelling. Every time I read Sean Lewis, I feel like I’m putting together an emotional puzzle, an activity for your soul if you will. ABOVE SNAKES is a gem of a series that should be read and shared with everyone; it shares that rare air of being a title that stretches across the table regardless if folks read comics or not. Is it KINGDOM COME? No. Is it a really good story that not only entertains but exercises your soul? Yes.

Final Thoughts

ABOVE SNAKES is an unorthodox tale of being on a vision quest that’s fueled by love and revenge. At times, they wrestle back and forth between what is more important. Dirt has the unwanted job of trying to figure out when it’s enough and being satisfied with the decision. Lewis, Sherman, and Otsmane-Elhaou operate as a three-headed creative juggernaut on ABOVE SNAKES.
