Absolute Batman #23: Things Fall Down

Absolute Batman #23, written by Scott Snyder, drawn by Nick Dragotta, colored by Frank Martin, and lettered by Tom Napolitano, continues to put Bruce Wayne through the wringer. The issue is emotionally tense from start to finish, with everything Bruce has built continuing to fall apart around him. His relationships are strained, his resources are disappearing, and the more isolated he becomes, the more he seems to be becoming his own worst enemy.

Snyder has introduced a massive amount of familiar characters into this universe, and at times it can feel a little jarring. There are plenty of familiar plot elements here from now classic storylines. With another writer, it could feel like a speedrun through Batman’s greatest hits. However, Snyder continually finds ways to subvert expectations and put his own spin on those familiar ideas. So far, the series hasn’t had a miss. The introduction of Clayface is particularly effective. The Absolute Universe’s take on the character is genuinely unsettling, and there is something downright terrifying about the way Clayface leaves his mark. It’s another example of how Absolute Batman can take something readers recognize and make it feel completely different.

Snyder’s pacing and structure are also a major strength. The issue moves between action and quieter emotional scenes without losing its tension, building toward the feeling that everything is slipping away from Bruce. Nick Dragotta makes sure each of those moments lands. His artwork captures the emotion behind the action just as effectively as the scale of the larger sequences, while Frank Martin’s colors continue to complement his work beautifully.
