Review
Absolute Flash #2 continues where the last issue left off with Wally in the desert and trying to figure out what has happened to him as he is hunted by this universe’s version of the Rogues. The issue, for the most part, continues to lay the groundwork and status quo for Wally/The Flash and his supporting characters.
In between the scenes of Wally trying to elude the Rogues who seemingly work for his dad, Lemire provides some flashbacks to the incident at Barry’s lab and the pursuit confrontation between Barry (in a Flash-like outfit) and Wally’s dad. Lemire also continues to tease what is to come or possibly could be as Wally says he sees two tomorrows.
The main part of the issue involves the Rogues attempting to try and capture Wally. In the Absolute Universe Captain Cold, Captain Boomerang, and Golden Glider seem to be fairly competent characters and more of a trained group rather than a group of individuals with different goals and objectives. Of all the Rogues, this universe’s Trickster is the most interesting, aside from Grodd, who looks like a cross between Gleek, Beast Boy, and the Ultra Humanite. The Rogues, so far are the most interesting characters that have been introduced, even though Wally is the main character.
The art and colorwork continue to add a kinetic feel to the story making it feel like a Flash book.
While It is still early on in this series, Lemire still needs to provide a hook for the characters and pick up the pacing of the larger story being told or it could start to feel like The Flash is just running in place.
Final Thoughts
Absolute Flash #2 continues to build the universe around this universe's Flash as it continues to build the mystery around what has given this Wally his powers, while teasing what readers can hope to expect as the story plays out over the next issues.
