Review

After the battle with Goldface, Jo and Hal find themselves joined on the run by ex-DEO agent: Cameron Chase (Jo’s ex-wife), Simon Baz (Chase’s partner), and Kari Limbo (just here for the ride. As the group figure out their next move, their enemies start to bring their own plans to fruition as visitors from the stars also begin to make their presence known.

Green Lantern is more methodical in its pacing than its contemporaries, focusing more on it’s worldbuilding and the cosmic lore surrounding this new universe than bombastic hero fights, though there are plenty of those to be had here as well. However, this focus on cosmic lore expansion can come at the expense of it’s title character as Jo doesn’t get much to do here. At times Jo feels like a passenger in her own story, but perhaps that is the feeling Ewing is going for.

Ewing continues to do a good job of setting up the pieces needed for the next arc of the story which appears to be a bit more action focused. It’s still a mystery of just how the Emotional Spectrum functions in this universe, but Ewing does a good job of exploring it in way that makes it rewarding to explore as we are introduced to more characters that have been influenced by it. Hector Hammond also remains a delightfully evil villain, having taken on Lex Luthor’s role until his character is more fleshed out in Absolute Superman.

Jahnoy Lindsay’s art and colors add much needed gravitas and weight to Ewing’s narrative. Special attention should be paid to the page where Kari Limbo “reads” Jo’s wedding ring (which doubles as her lantern ring) which is washed in a beautiful array of colors using the spectrum to foretell events that will happen later in the story,

Final Thoughts

Absolute Green Lantern #11 may not center its title character directly, it is still a worthwhile issue that does a good job adding to the stakes of the next arc.
