ENTER: SINESTRO! Tomar Re and Jo Mullein find themselves face-to-face with the Blackstars at long last, but they are not prepared for the might of Sinestro!

Review

Jo has overcome Tomar Re, but a war still rages outside of her body between her friends and the Blackstars. As Jo dives deeper and deeper into the abilities of the Green Lantern, she discovers something or someone that might have been best left alone.

Things get even more dire in this most recent issue of AGL, and it’s not just in space. We tap back in with Chase and Baz as they continue their search for Hammond’s mole, which conveniently does tie back to the plot in space as a mysterious voice from the Void reaches out to Agent Double before his untimely end. There is something inside the Void and its somehow connected to the Hal’s violet light which could be the most powerful of them all.

Al Ewing does a solid job of juggling these multiple plot threads and characters that tie together in a very interesting way. The real meat of the issue comes in the form of a flashback to when Jo returned to Evergreen. She is eating dinner with her friends and it really gives the reader very good insight into all out earthbound light-bearers before the Green Lantern arrived. This allows Jo to delve even further into the Green Lantern’s power, but what she finds is not as pleasant as she initially thinks.

Sid Kotian’s art is at its most striking, with Prasad Roa’s enchanting colors culminating in a beautiful cascade of greens and violets towards the end of the issue. Every month I praise this title’s art, and each month it manages to outdo itself.

Final Thoughts

AGL #16 gives a very welcome expansion of its lore and themes in a visually stunning and narratively tight package.
