Absolute Green Lantern #18: No [Man] Escapes

In 1943, Special Agent Emily Hawke encountered a plot by the sinister nazi scientist Baron Blitzkrieg. A giant monster made of metal emerged from a hole of absolute darkness proclaiming “No [Man] Escapes”. It dragged her into the hole, and that was the last time we saw her. Until today, where she has made contact with rogue DEO against Simon Baz and Cameron Chase.

After sorting things out in space, the next arc of Absolute Green Lantern starts us off back on Earth to check back in on Baz and Chase and their investigation into their own DEO superiors and their shady dealings. However, they are now joined by Emily Hawke, who debuted way back in issue 13, who ahs her own connections to the mysteries of the DEO which seem to all center around the colossal Manhunters.

Al Ewing once again expands the lore of the Absolute universe by adding in the Manhunters, making them more ethereal monstrosities rather than the unstoppable androids we know them as in the main universe. Not much is known about them right now, but how they are tying into the larger color spectrum as well as what the other colors will mean as the story moves on are very interesting threads to be pulled. Emily Hawke so far is a fun character and has the distinction of being one of the wholly original creations for this universe which really shows the potential that the Absolute universe still has within.

Jahnoy Lindsay is back on art and does some really good work here. The Manhunters are as intimidating as ever and the colors enhance the atmosphere all the more. This remains a gorgeous book.
