Comic Watch Reviews:

Hal Jordan has been overcome by his curse and has turned his sights on Jo! Can the new Lantern figure out how to hold her ground, or will her light be extinguished for good?

Review

Absolute Green Lantern #3 continues to tell the story in two different threads: the continued confrontation between Hal and Jo in the present and the backstory of Abin Sur and the events in Evergreen. Both of these threads are given similar page space with the events from Evergreen moving the overall plot forward more than the Hal/Jo thread.

For the parts that take place in the past, John Stewart takes the main stage as he applies the scientific process to the green barrier, which ultimately leads his demise after he is judged by Abin Sur. Ewing reveals the yellow weakness through a series of interesting means, and shows how Hal takes what is learned and will seal his fate as the Black Hand and seen in the present.

Speaking of the part of the issue that takes place in the present, Jo wielding the Green Lantern ring confronts Hal and the two battle, as Hal continues to be out of control and Jo is able to defend herself and, for the time being, get the upper hand on Hal. As a character, Jo continues to be a one dimensional character, as aside from the brief interaction she has with John, not much has been revealed about the titular character. Abin Sur continues to be a blank slate as Ewing has yet to reveal his purpose on Earth or how and why he is “judging” the citizens of Evergreen.

The art and colorwork remain consistent and well-tailored to the story being told.

Final Thoughts

Absolute Green Lantern #3 continues to be a steady yet slow burn as the stage continues to be set for more information and fleshing out of the Green Lantern mythos in the Absolute Univers
