Review
Readers are in for a spectacular climax to Absolute Power in Absolute Power #4, written by Mark Waid, with art by Dan Mora, colored by Alejandro Sanchez, and lettered by Ariana Maher. The four-issue event had plenty of spectacular tie-ins and is opening the door for much more, but the flagship title did so much in a relatively short amount of time. Waid is no stranger to large events, with a few under his belt this year alone, so he certainly got the most out of the four issues. Overall, Waid laid things out with masterful pacing to this series with an incredible creative team bringing things to life. As mentioned in previous reviews for Absolute Power, this series packs in a lot of characters which can be overwhelming for the creative team as well as the reader. Still, it truly felt like everyone got their moment and it was earned organically to the story.
Dan Mora’s work on Absolute Power #4 is his best work on the series and some of his best at DC. Mora’s ability to achieve a sense of scale and scope is downright impressive and feels outright epic at times. At the same time, his attention to detail and ability to capture authentic emotion in faces is what sets his work above so many others. Alejandro Sanchez’s colors in this issue are breathtaking and help the art transform into this massive story. Though both Mora and Sanchez’s styles are distinct from the legendary Alex Ross’, there are shades and shimmers of his work in Kingdom Come. Readers consume comics differently now, and it seems there is a new event every month, but the art and scale of Absolute Power feel cinematic and massive.
Final Thoughts
Absolute Power comes to a close with Absolute Power #4, though things are far from over. Readers can usually come to expect that things will be resolved by the end in big events like this, and that is true here. However, Waid shook things up just a little while putting the toys back in the toybox and set the stage for some big things to come. Readers are in for a treat for what comes next. This is a wonderful time to be a fan of DC.
