Review

Here we are in Action Comics talking about yet another story where Superman plays Detective. At this point in Bendis’s run, it is what it is. We are building up (still) to a reveal about who or what Leviathan could be, so Lois and Supes have gone undercover as Agents of Spyral Andi and Chaz to gain more information.

The issue is honestly a chore to get through. It’s one dialogue filled page after another following Supes sleuthing around after some important information was acquired by Lois. The worst part is it really doesn’t go anywhere either. We are introduced to Tiger, their inside informant with Spyral. After Supes is forced to put a stop to an attack on their lives however, Lois and Tiger are nowhere to be found and the bright blue explosion that occurred during their brief confrontation has somehow left an imprint on Supes.

Where did Lois and Tiger go? Who attacked them and why is Supes glowing blue now? Just more questions and clues that are meant to prepare you for the next issue which answers the main question we’ve cared about for so long…who or what is Leviathan?

I wish I could say I was surprised that Bendis managed to use another mysterious clue to push the story forward instead of providing answers, but the tagline for next issue says “Leviathan Revealed!” so hopefully the newest mystery has actual ramifications on the overarching narrative. The artwork doesn’t leave much to be complained about, but eventually that isn’t enough to maintain readers’ interest.

Part 4 of the Leviathan Rises arc is further proof that the series is simply spinning its wheels until the upcoming event that will truly delve into Leviathan releases. Hopefully after they finally manage to reveal what’s going on we can get back to being ACTION Comics…

Final Thoughts

Action Comics #1010 is arguably necessary for the development of the "Leviathan Rises" arc and the upcoming "Leviathan" event, but fails to deliver anything particularly exciting outside of the promise for real answers in the next issue...
