Action Comics #1022: Home Sweet Home

Brian Michael Bendis does not cease to show his talent. Whether it is Action Comics or any of the Leviathan related books, I have been completely impressed by Bendis. Not necessarily by the writing of each issue, because sometimes it does feel lacking, but by the scope of its arcs. Issue #1021 was a huge climax to an arc, but issue #1022 already feels just as big. Bendis still has my complete attention with issue #1022. The appearance of Young Justice in #1021 was a surprise and finding where Conner Kent fits in is quite the mystery. When Naomi first made an appearance a few issues back, Batman and Superman were able to bring her home. In this issue, Clark and Jon Kent bring Conner home … to the Kent’s. What is surprising is that they remember him, but Clark doesn’t. Essentially having three Supermen in one place could be confusing, but somehow Bendis can navigate the reader through anything.

I have grown quite fond of Bendis and Romita Jr.’s work together. Sometimes Romita Jr.’s art seems a little off to me, but if I let every little thing about the art get to me, then I would never enjoy a comic again. Romita Jr.’s art is simple and not too busy, which is extremely appreciated when it comes to absorbing Bendis’ writing. Bendis and Romita Jr. both did incredible jobs at capturing Clark, Jon, and Conner. Bendis could be the greatest writer on Earth, but without a great artist, having three people that for the most part look identical, would be confusing or a strain on the eye. Romita Jr.’s Clark, Jon, and Conner all look like their own characters. They give Bendis’ great writing a place to stay.
