Action Comics #1028: Just a Perfect Day

Brian Michael Bendis’ run on Action Comics comes to an end with issue #1028. If I could distill this issue into a single sentence, it’d be, “Everything is okay.” With Bendis’ writing mixed with Romita Jr’s familiar art, Action Comics #1028 ends with the feeling that very feeling. Everything is going to be okay for Metropolis, and maybe even us. Tying up loose ends is sometimes hard to do. Things either feel shoehorned in and rushed or completely forgotten or neglected. Action Comics #1028 is well-paced and a satisfying close to the run. Though the issue is relatively fast-paced, nothing feels rushed or shoehorned. Bendis knows exactly what he is doing.

Among the many things that happen, Conner’s story resolving (for now?) had the most closure. Conner goes a home to Clark’s parents, which are somehow also Conner’s, making them brothers. There is nothing more comforting than going home, especially when Conner thought that could never happen again. Clark and Jon spent the day together, eating tacos, helping citizens, and even some casual crime-fighting felt so right and so enjoyable to see. The single conversation between father and son depicted over several panels and scenes was reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes sledding down a hill while having some sort of deep conversation. It’s moments like these that bring closure to the hecticness and fast-paced action of the earlier issues. Jon’s goodbye to his parents before he heads “home” was touching and once again brought a feeling of closure. Who knows what will happen with Action Comics #1029, and the new year, but for now, everything is okay.
