Review
Action Comics #1061 kicks off a new era for the Man of Steel with writer Jason Aaron at the helm. It’s an exciting issue with an ending that will certainly hook readers.
Writer Jason Aaron takes the reins of Action from Phillip Kennedy Johnson. It’s certainly a tall order to follow such a strong run, however, time will tell if Aaron can make his mark on the Man of Steel.
The issue kicks off with Bizarro bursting through a magical planet completely bent on destruction. After causing chaos, he is teleported to Metropolis with magical tricks up his sleeve and it kicks off a punch filled issue. While this premiere issue for Aaron is more action focused, the plot around Bizarro and how he will use magic to take on Superman is an interesting enough plot to entice readers to follow this run closely.
The pacing is quick, but not overwhelming, and as an issue, as long as readers are aware of Bizarro’s personality and position between ally and nemesis, the writing provides just enough to understand without being isolating.
What is particularly well done in this issue are the art and colors. Creative team John Timms (artist) and Rex Lokus (colorist) put together some impressive full page spreads as well as the cover. A particularly awesome moment is Superman over two pages flying over Metropolis. There is so much to take in and the art both showcases the grand scope of Superman and the force he has behind him.
Final Thoughts
As a whole this issue is enjoyable, however, there are some elements that may leave readers a bit nervous. The scale in which the issue ends is a risky move that puts a lot of pressure to stick the landing. Bizarro’s personality can be an acquired taste and mileage may vary depending on the reader, however, there is still a story worth following that could prove Action Comics is in good hands.
