Review
Brainiac has unleashed his Brainiac Queen on the Super family, but is he in pursuit of more than just power? Action Comics #1066 is the penultimate issue of the House of Brainiac event at DC. It’s an all-out war as the House of El takes on the House of Brainiac to save the world from the Brainiac Queen’s domination. Brainiac claims his schemes are for a thirst for power and knowledge but it’s clear what he really wants is a family. Set against the backdrop of Brainiac’s ship, this action-packed issue delves deep into themes of family, legacy, and the consequences of wielding immense knowledge.
As the House of Brainiac event comes to a close, this issue really brings heart to the story. Joshua Williamson has done an amazing job at highlighting the theme of family throughout the event. From the start, this event has been a family story and illustrates the different family dynamics that exist in the DC Universe. The Super family is characterized as the glowing example of love and power, while the dysfunctional House of Lobo is the glowing example of how culture creates familiarity. Meanwhile, the House of Brainiac is the perfect example of a family torn apart by madness and the House of Luthor is a family brought together by redemption. Each of these family dynamics is written so well and perfectly parallels the characterization of these Houses. Williamson’s extraordinary writing is demonstrated in the emotional aspects amidst the action of this issue. He somehow manages to make Brainiac a sympathetic villain as we learn what he truly seeks is family.
It’s been a riveting saga that has given so many Superman characters time in the spotlight. Of course, one of these characters is a character that I feel has been shafted since the rise of Jon Kent: Superboy. Not only does Superboy get time in the spotlight on this issue, but he is also a major player in the fight’s resolution.
Rafa Sandoval’s artwork is a visual feast, capturing the iconic grandeur of Superman while infusing the action sequences with kinetic energy. Sandoval ‘s attention to detail is evident in every panel, making each fight look real and dynamic. The Super family looks incredible in every panel, bringing emotion and determination to their illustrations. In addition, the use of color and shading by Alejandro Sanchez enhances the mood, creating a cinematic experience that immerses readers in the heart of the action and highlights the alien aspects.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Action Comics #1066 is an exciting penultimate issue to the House of Brainiac event. Williamson and Sandoval’s collaboration delivers a gripping tale that blends superhero spectacle with profound thematic exploration. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to Superman's world, this event serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of DC's iconic superhero.
