Review

After their superhero subversion series Vanish, KLC Press has returned to deliver their second superhero series, The Schlub. Having devoured its inaugural issue, it’s safe to say that this fresh debut series will stand out amid a sea of monotonous superhero tales in the current industry. Ryan Stegman, Kenny Porter, and Tyrell Cannon have come together to craft a tale that’s comedic and incredible, infused with potent themes.

The story follows Roger Walton, a struggling dentist wrestling with the demands of adult life, as his personality, physique, and heart slowly wear thin. However, everything changes when he finds himself body-swapped with the world’s greatest superhero, Cirrus! The narrative probes whether Roger will use his newfound power for good or succumb to his instincts and exploit his abilities for personal gain.

This issue moves at a rapid but excellent pace, peppering its 24 pages with an orchestrated introduction that never feels overwhelming. The team transitions smoothly from scene to scene, carrying both a captivating narrative and abundant character development effortlessly. The book’s opening alone sufficiently introduces readers to the story the team aims to convey, utilizing every panel effectively. There isn’t a single wasted moment in these pages, yet the book never loses itself in its swift pace. Following the tradition of classic origin stories, The Schlub #1 furnishes readers with all they need to know about Roger and Cirrus concisely, while paving the way for future growth and storytelling.

In terms of character portrayal, Roger is undeniably pitiable, with enough goodness in his heart to make him charming. The story makes it clear from the outset that this is a tale of growth and redemption, encouraging readers to find something likable about a man who is otherwise detestable and, in turn, seeing their own flaws as malleable traits that can change. Stories like this on a main stage are increasingly rare, but the team fearlessly presents engaging characters from the very first issue.

Tyrell Cannon’s art is also in full swing here, and when coupled with Mike Spicer’s coloring, he skillfully transforms an almost chaotic amount of detail into a captivating and atmospheric visual style. Emotion, humor, and exhilarating action emanate from every panel, making for a reading experience that, based on visuals alone, is remarkably strong.

Final Thoughts

The Schlub #1 is a blast of fresh air into the superhero comics scene that it oh so desperately needs. With fantastic art and moments of genuine comedy, readers are in store for a exciting ride.
