Review

A lot of people say that superhero comics have become stale and predictable (they haven’t), and those people just need to grab a copy of this book and that opinion will change. This comic has been in the works for quite a while and it shows in the story. Jason Aaron puts a lot into this book and it definitely pays off, already in the first issue. Multiverse stories can be hit or miss, but this definitely hits. I was most impressed by the pacing of this issue, he doesn’t rush into anything and leave you scratching your head. He firmly establishes one particular world so that you understand where a character is coming from. One of my least favorite things is a multiverse character just popping up and then the writer leaves you to figure out how their Earth is different from ours. Aside from that, this is just a really enjoyable issue. TONS of action and mystery and some really great dialogue including some laugh-out-loud moments. Aaron puts together a great first issue here.

And artist Aaron Kuder does his share of the heavy lifting too. These pages are very impressive. He’s tasked with drawing an Earth that’s totally unfamiliar with, yet one that we’ve seen glimpses of in many different comics before. There’s a healthy amount of double-page spreads in this issue, and each one is done almost perfectly. His designs are really great and I cant wait to see more of them. With the amount of Avengers that there are and all the universe there are in the multiverse, the sky’s pretty much the limit as far as his opportunity to put his own touch on the cast of characters in this book and we should all look forward to it. This is a very enjoyable book to look at.

Final Thoughts

A solid start to a series that has unbelievable potential. Solid writing gels with Kuder's art to make this a stand-out series. If you're looking for something different, here it is.
