Review

Ain’t No Grave #1 is like the Tardis. From the outside, it looks like just another callbox (or comic), but…it’s bigger on the inside. In Skottie Young’s latest offering, Ain’t No Grave is a western mystical fairytale that boasts a suburb story backed by great visuals. With big sprawling landscapes, the book feels bigger than the pages could contain.

We’re introduced to Ryder, a former outlaw turned housewife who finds herself going down a familiar path. A path that she thought she would never have to travel again. As the story progresses, Ryder’s heartbreak comes through with crushing beauty through Jorge Corona’s art which mirrors her soul’s pain. As the story progresses we start to get a better understanding (or so we think) of Ryder’s past and why she is going down this path. Without giving away any spoilers, the target of her wrath is one that will certainly lead to monumental battles in future panels. For a first issue, this is packed with layers that promise to amaze as time goes on.

Ryder’s story is one of heartbreak and determination that will make Ain’t No Grave required reading for 2024.

Final Thoughts

Westerns, much like horror are a great blank canvas to paint a broad of picture as you see fit. Ain’t No Grave paints a unique story in a familiar setting.
