Alienated #5: Truth Hurts

Alienated #5 is another issue that initially appears to be primarily focused on Samuel, so I expected to be less engaged as he is by far my least favorite character. However, the issue quickly showed that the story is reaching the point that has been foreshadowed as Samuel fully embraces his selfish motives for Chip.

Simon Spurrier continues to show his grasp of storytelling and characterization. Even though the most prominent character arc in this issue is Samuel’s downward spiral, progression can be seen in both other Sams. Samantha takes steps towards letting go of her past, while Samir displays the ability to be fully authentic with people for the first time. Chip’s character and growth are also on full display as his bonds with the Sams have caused him to grow and develop. Even the supporting cast show depth in the form of Samuel’s mother, Waxy, and Vern.

The art by Chris Wildgoose continues to shine on every page. Like the last few issues, #5 is filled with emotion and pain. The fact that the common thread through the issue is the alien Chip makes it all the more impressive how clear these feelings are put on the page. Andre May’s use of color is vibrant, contributing to the detail in the depiction of Chip’s power remaining enough to make my skin crawl a little. Also on display is the lettering by Jim Campbell that continues to stand out to me through the series in all the right ways
