All in the Family

In All in the Family, LB Lee takes readers into their head, which is the home of the eight characters the comic is centered around. Everyone investigates and navigates life plagued by trauma. Their stories must be believed and they must be heard. LB Lee makes use of the comic form and masterfully represents their dissociative identity disorder. Previously known as multiple personality disorder, DID is a condition where one person has multiple personalities; several personalities sharing a body. All in the Family finds the multiple uncovering family secrets and traumas.

I was blown away by All in the Family’s structure. The comic form is an informative way of understanding DID. Readers are able to see the distinct personalities and how they all interact. They are a family that looks out and protects each other. Each personality has a distinct voice and purpose. The varying art styles perfectly complement the turbulent narrative.

There were several moments while reading that I became so overtaken by waves of emotion that I had to put down my tablet and leave the room. If the book is this powerful, I can’t even begin to imagine what LB Lee went through, but this book is the best place to start. I am a huge advocate for mental illness awareness. Mainstream comics are still behind on representation, but LB Lee is part of the crucial wave of creators making meaningful and important works.
