Amazing Spider-Man #18
Recap
Madeline Pryor has given up the cause thanks to Jean Grey's actions (read all about it in Dark Web: X-men!), by giving Madeline memories of her son Jean removed the Goblin Queens motivation, sadly this makes her just the latest person to abandon Ben Reilly, who's girlfriend dethroned Madeline and gives her scepter to Ben, making him king of Limbo!
Meanwhile Spidey and Rek-rap (spideys demon doppelganger, he's wonderful) fight The Insidious Six, a demon cabal modeled after the Sinister Six.
Review
Oh my goooodd Rek-Rap is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, I hope he never leaves even though I know he will. I laughed harder at this comic than I’ve laughed at a comic in years. He’s exactly what we need in these troubled times.
The heel turn by Pryor feels a bit abrupt if you aren’t reading the other titles in the event but it makes sense in its way. Ben’s reaction makes sense as well within the event. Eve seems to have no motivation of her own and only plays the foil to further Ben’s goals, it felt a little gross the way she just existed in this issue to serve Ben. I’m curious if there’s some reveal larger motivations and if there are I will gladly retract this complaint but I’m a bit nervous as you can imagine.
The art by Ed Mcguinness is flawless, the darkly comedic action plays into his strengths as an artist in every way, I love the fight scenes between Rek-rap and the Insidious Six so much and will be posting screenshots forever, this issue should be required reading and I’ll be recommending it to everyone along with last issue as an example of an event comic that flies above and beyond (see: the Deadpool tie in to civil war, the squirrell girl tie in to war of the realms, the entire asgardians of the galaxy series) The coloring by Marcio Menyz and Eric Arciniega really elevates the art to pure perfection, 10/10 work all around. The cover by John Romita Jr, Scott Hanna and Romulo Fajardo Jr is also phenomenal, my only complaint is that it’s not Rek-rap, I need more Rek-rap in my life, and I always will.
Final Thoughts
This is a great comic, everyone should read it.
