Amazing Spider-Man #39: Spidey and JJJ

I think that this issue is probably my favorite issue so far that is 90% talking heads. Writer Nick Spencer really knows how to write some dialogue!! While the issue is mostly Spider-Man and JJJ having a conversation, it’s as entertaining as some big company-wide mega-event crossovers that I’ve read. He digs deep into their personalities to give us some pretty big reveals about characters that we thought we knew frontwards and backward. Now, don’t get me wrong, when the action hits, it hits big. There is a fantastic “B” story that continues this issue and even comes into conflict with the main story, and I am seriously counting the days until the next issue because I want to see how it’s resolved. As if that wasn’t enough, things start to heat up even further with the back-up stories that have been running for the past few issues. It’s really nice to see a story do the slow burn for a while before it becomes the main focus of the book and I have a feeling when this one hits, it’s going to be something pretty awesome.

Another issue by artist Iban Coello and I can’t even tell you how much I enjoy his work. He’s one of those guys that’s done a lot of work, but somehow always flies under the radar. But you guys know that I can see the future, and he’s about to become a headliner!!! It was announced earlier this week that he’ll be working along with Tom Taylor on a Marvel event sometime this year. We’ll be able to say that we loved him “way back when he was on Spider-Man”. Honestly, he’s a really fantastic artist who’s got a style that’s really hard to describe other than “awesome!”. He really does a great job this issue, there are many different times when it seems that his panels are actually moving. Another all-around great issue by Coello.
