Recap

Review

Our boy Spidey has been down before. Money, love, family commitments, you name it, he’s let somebody down. But, he’s always been able to make things right in the end and in some cases, let the other person knows just how much he cares about them. This time, however, there is absolutely nothing he can do to make up for what he did the last issue. If you do some work for a gangster, what does that make you? Thankfully, author Zeb Wells gives us a little bit of an answer to that very question in this issue. Just like always, the writing this issue is top-notch, Wells is always finding a way to inject humor into some issues with really heavy subject matter. This book is almost bleak, but Zeb Wells manages to make the book very enjoyable while keeping the tone. It seems like Wells is having a very good time writing Tombstone’s crew, because they’re certainly enjoyable to read. At times, they’re almost laugh-out-loud funny, and that’s just their dialogue. I honestly didn’t know where this story was headed when this series started, but I did NOT expect it to take this route. This book is one of the most consistently entertaining, keep you guessing, comic books on the stands right now.

We are getting really spoiled in the art department regarding this book. When a superstar gets to the level that John Romita Jr. is at, you don’t remember that he can keep up a monthly pace. You just expect to get maybe 2 issues or half a mini-series out of him in a year. Thankfully for us, John Romita Jr. is a workhorse!! It’s honestly great to have some artistic consistency on a title. It’s a little hard to come by in the current comic landscape. As always, his work shines with an unbelievable tone and mood. He’s the master at making things look and feel dark without making you feel like it’s a Batman book. Another great issue by this great comic artist.

Final Thoughts

This book is getting crazy interesting and crazy entertaining. If it's not on your pulls list already, it really should be. This is Marvel's premiere book and it definitely feels like it!
