Recap

Review

This is it, webheads! A bold new era begins right here in this very issue! Guess what, though. This time they actually mean it, because a new era does begin in this very issue and I have to admit that yeah, it’s pretty bold.  I really like what author Nick Spencer did in this issue. There’s a lot of great superhero/supervillain stuff here. Like, really classic stuff. Gangsters sitting around a table in a dark room planning on who’s gonna take out who, in-fighting between them over who’s going to get what reward, it almost felt like I was reading a Silver Age comic in some parts. In other parts? Not so much. I think that the one flaw this issue has is that it’s VERY March 2021. Now, I’m not some old guy that hates technology, quite the opposite actually. But in this issue, there’s so much technology and similar things that I’m honestly not sure are gonna be around in five years if even that. I mean, why does Iron Man get new armor every few years? Because technology is always changing. The good outweighs the bad here, for sure, but I think that maybe when we look back on this issue, there might be a handful of laughs due to “remember when that was a thing!” moments.

Hey, it’s Patrick Gleason on art this issue!! Not too shabby for the first issue in a new era that introduces a new costume. He always brings his A-game, but even more so this issue, and it shows. I’m not sure of his schedule or anything like that, but it really seems like he took extra time on this issue, going over everything twice so that everything looks extra perfect and the book has that look that makes you realize that the story has turned the corner and is headed in a totally new reaction. Superior art from front to back and you’re going to want to take some extra time with this one.

Final Thoughts

Even with a couple of head-scratching moments, this book is still up there in quality with the other issues of Spencer's run. Add to that, Gleason's phenomenal art and you've got the first "classic" issue of 2021.
