Recap

Review

This issue didn’t wow me as the previous issues have. It wasn’t bad, but as the saying goes, they can’t all be home runs. Truth be told, I was expecting a really big crash since I’ve really liked the majority of author Nick Spencer’s run. This one technically has it all, action, mystery, villains, guest-stars, and drama too but it lacks that secret ingredient that I can’t put my finger on, There are some very interesting developments in this issue in the drama department, actually, I feel comfortable calling one downright shocking. One thing I love is that Spencer finds a logical way to include people from Peter’s past. Familiar cops, the staff of the Daily Bugle, and just good old friends. He takes them and has no problem shaking their lives up, which inevitably affects Peter Parker. Something that disappointed me a lot about this issue is that for some reason, Boomerang has gone from actually funny partner to a really annoying friend. Serious annoyance. Very. Bad. Moving on, WOW, the novelty of the new costume has almost worn off already. Last issue is had that new car smell, but this issue the costume just seems kinda like you know that this is the Spider-Man Marvel Legends figure that’s gonna warm the pegs this holiday season. Also, the costume looks distractingly like the one that Mike Norton designed for the Marvel hero Gravity.

Artist Patrick Gleason knows what he’s doing. This issue is a little under par for him, but not enough to take away any enjoyment of the title. It might be the way he “inks” this issue, but everything seems a little heavy-handed. I think a lighter touch would’ve made things a little more palatable. There are some killer spreads in this issue, though, and that almost makes up for it.

Final Thoughts

Good, but not great. If you're following this title, plunk down you're $4 with the person at the counter and know you'll be entertained. If you're a "wait and see if I like it" person, you might want to wait for the next issue, as this one isn't as strong as other issues in the series.
