Review

Amazons Attack #1 is a strong extension of the political fallout from the latest Wonder Woman series. Complete with conspiracy, action, and a strong team of DC warriors, this issue keeps up with the war against the Amazons while having a narrative of its own and an exciting premise.

Following Nubia, Queen of the Amazons, this issue puts her in the forefront of managing tensions between the US and Themyscira. With an entire country protesting for and against the Amazons much of the plot is spent showing the other side of the struggle between the two worlds. Though largely a set up issue, there is a good mix of characters and plot to have readers excited for the next issue.

It’s a smart move by DC to branch out and showcase other members of the “Wonder Family,” given the complex (and exciting) challenges Wonder Woman faces in the main continuity. Writer Josie Campbell does well with crafting a plot that puts Nubia, Faruka II, Yara, and Mary Marvel at the forefront and while it’s only the first issue, there is already a lot of chemistry between team and the plot finds a smart way to incorporate a member of the Shazam family with the Amazons.

While the story is enjoyable, the pacing is a little rushed and puts some characters in the plot without proper context. It’s a very minor element and given Amazons everyone are being challenged all over the DC Universe, but I suspect this will be answered in the subsequent issues.

The art from Vasco Georgiev and colors from Alex Guimaraes are both well done in this issue. Panels and art are dynamic and the locations are well done considered the story jumps across several locations. There are a lot of sharp angles in the positioning of the panels and given the tension of Amazons facing conspiracies it’s a style that fits the story very well. Becca Carey, the letterer, does a great job at the positions of the words and “sound effects” and the design never makes the page feel full of text but rather flows nicely.

Final Thoughts

This issue is worth checking out and I was excited to see a branch of the Themyscira universe participate in the conspiracy from the main Wonder Woman story. I am excited to see where the team goes and what situations Campbell has ready in future issues.
