Recap

THE WAR ON WARRIOR WOMEN CONTINUES! As Mary Marvel and the splinter group of Amazons search to find asylum, they uncover the history of something much darker. Will they be able to stop the impending wave of discord before it’s too late?

Review

After the plethora of chaos the Amazons along with Mary Marvel have faced, nowhere is safe. Discrimination against the Amazons has taken the DC Universe by storm as even Wonder Woman isn’t immune from the public preaching the idea “Amazons Go Home!”. The main mystery still driving the story is who exactly is framing the Amazons for atrocities committed against humanity.

Critically speaking, it never made sense why Mary Marvel joins forces with Nubia, Yara Flor, and Faruka II. She’s not an Amazon, doesn’t belong to any tribe. I have to hand it to Josie Campbell for not leaving any unanswered questions, no matter how small. What changes the turn of events in issue three of the series is Mary coming face to face with an old enemy who was behind bars, an enemy who constantly refers to Mary as her student.

This mystery woman of a villain has hints of Joker and Reverse Flash in her as she taunts Mary in a way that makes her seem like she’s trying to get the hero to not just second guess herself but throw her own self worth right out the window. It feels like a hard slap to the face when she practically calls Mary a secondary character and tells her that no family wants her.

What also stood out to me was when Nubia meets Ismene Dimakos, a woman who was a professor of Greek mythology but now Greek history. She is an interesting character based on her background and the circumstances in which she is introduced, as she tells the leader of the Amazons about the Amazon Refugee Camps she’s been appointed to run. The way she portrays about Amazons becoming a targeted minority hits hard, and as a professor, one could tell she’s most certainly passionate about it.

I hope to see Professor Dimakos again in the series, or even make an appearance or team up with Tom King’s Wonder Woman.

Final Thoughts

Issue 3 keeps the saga going on smoothly, keeping consistent art and mystery alive. With three out of six issues in, it's safe to say that Amazons Attack is going to be one of the most solid titles under the Dawn of DC banner.
