Review

To say the Amazons have had it rough, well call that the understatement of the century. It started with Wonder Woman and now the other Amazons, Faruka, Nubia, and Yara find themselves in a world that believes it is much better off with them dead. The story, written by Josie Campbell and illustrated by Vasco Georgiev and Alex Guimaraes continues in the fifth expansion of the series.

On two fronts, the Amazons have been given a bad image by Herakles, who thinks the time of the Amazons must come to an end. On the real world front, Peacemaker has been given orders to hunt down the Amazons.

There are some issues with this installment, but nothing too grave. For starters, the dialogue between Peacemaker and Faruka is pretty hard to read. Not that it’s difficult to understand, but a childish taunting match between a weapon of the U.S. Government and what is supposed to be a divine warrior wasn’t really on my 2024 comic book bingo card. Thankfully though, the taunting does lead to a surprising turn of events involving a bag of carrots and the magical rabbit known as Hoppy, which takes Peacemaker by surprise.

However, even through Campbell’s difficult or even humorous writing, she still manages to be a fantastic storyteller, proving herself again towards the end of the novel when it’s revealed who was behind all of this. Through many different guises, there is a shock at the end that, for a penultimate issue, makes you wish the story would go on and on until there’s nothing left to write anymore. Makes you kind of hopeful for an Amazonian civil war.

As a quick note on the art, Georgiev and Guimaraes do an excellent job at providing artwork that imagines the story being playful and fun, even throughout its darkest moments. It’s not an easy thing to do.

Final Thoughts

As the next issue is going to be the last, there's high expectations for the sixth issue and questions as to whether or not the story will continue or bleed into Tom King's Wonder Woman run. None the less, hats off to Josie Campbell for an amazing story and keeping us on the edge of our seats.
